Triple crown just out of reach for Joe Public
Though currently ranked only eighth on the creative league table, Joe Public is everybody’s darling this year. True, Ogilvy Cape Town carried off the AdFocus Agency of the Year Award in Johannesburg last week, pipping Joe Public by the slimmest of margins in the history of the award.
But the next day there was compensation for Joe Public when it won the Agencies’ Agency award at the launch of Jeremy Maggs’ The Annual, a 340-page hard-cover book containing a combination of agency advertorial and detailed data about the ad biz.Joe Public came as close as dammit to taking, for the first time, a triple crown award, made up of the above two and the AdReview Agency of the Year triumph, presented last May. Joe Public took the AdReview Agency of the Year and Democratic Choice Awards at AdReview. To that it has now added the Financial Mail Agency Leader of the Year to co-founders Gareth Leck and Pepe Marais.
Another agency enjoying a golden period is The MediaShop. Founded by Dick Reed 25 years ago, it’s still at the top of its game. It was named the AdFocus Media Agency of the Year, capping a year in which it won the AdReview Large Media Agency of the Year for the second year on the trot, and the MOST Award’s Full-Service Media Agency and Overall Media Agency of the Year for the third successive year.
Over the past 12 months it has grown its business by 16% off an enormous base, won nine out of 11 pitches and acquired R620m in new business.
